Brown Butter Dulce de Leche Rice Krispie Treats
Ingredients
- 5 Tablespoons Butter
- 1/4 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 10oz bag of Mini Marshmallows, divided
- 6 Cups Rice Krispies Cereal, cinnamon sugar flavored, see note
- 1/2 teaspoon Sea Salt, fine grain
- 1/2 Can Dulce de Leche
Instructions
- Line a 9×13-inch pan with parchment paper sling.
- Place a large pot on the stove over medium heat, add your butter and let it melt and then brown.
- Once the butter is browned, remove from the heat, add the salt and half of mini marshmallows. Stir until everything is completely melted and smooth. If you need to put it back on the heat to finish melting the marshmallows, that is fine. You just don't want the browned butter to burn.
- Mix in the vanilla extract once smooth.
- Add the Rice Krispies cereal and remaining mini marshmallows, and fold until completely covered.
- Transfer half of the mixture to your lined baking dish, and use wet fingers or the bottom of a cup to lightly flatten the RKTs. Don't compact them!
- Using a butter knife, spread an even layer of dulche de leche directly on the RKTs. Feel free to use more than half of the can.
- Top with the rest of the rice krispies mixture and lightly press it around until it is evenly spread into the pan. Let it set at room temperature until cooled.
Notes
This can be made with Cinnamon Sugar Rice Krispies. If you can’t find them at the store, you could add 1/4 – 1/3 cup of cinnamon sugar.
Browning butter: Place the pan over medium heat and add room temperature butter. Stir it gently as it melts. It will begin to foam and sizzle and then you will see little brown fleck forming on the bottom of the pan. As soon as you see those flecks, remove the pan from the heat.
